Kaira Looro Architecture Competition 2021. WOMEN’S HOUSE to eliminate all forms of discrimination to promote gender equality and female empowerment in Africa. 30-05-2021.

Teamwork: Ahd Farrag, Hossam Elyamani.

The idea evolved from the question “How could physical environment contribute to woman’s empowerment in the community?”. We find out that woman’s house should convey an inclusive statement for community members. It should accommodate a central space that will be recognized as community territory. In an urban argument, a diverted walkway from the main street is established to create a walk-through corridor crossing the central courtyard that will allow anyone to come across, loiter or stand and watch the activities that happen in the woman’s house.
The transition between the outside and the courtyard should be seamless without any physical obstacles. This will emphasize the importance of such a semi-enclosed space for everyone to express ideas or to participate in any form of shared activities.
The central space is to be truly public and attract crowds to hold any group and shared activities and equipped with walls for day-to-day notices and posters, microphones, and loudspeakers. The surrounded closed spaces will accommodate more specific tasks like management, administrative meetings, seminars, labs, and exhibitions.
Given the climate consideration of the site in southern Senegal Tanaff Valley, the courtyard must have some enclosure to maintain a comfortable climate while protecting it from the heat. Creating a lifted wooden structure on top of concrete beams to circulate the air while protecting it from direct sunlight and creating a central opening giving it a special character. An interesting illumination condition is created by the effect of the colored fabric with light.
